How to choose the right length speargun? ›

The water conditions at your diving location play a crucial role in selecting the right speargun length. In murky or low-visibility waters, a shorter speargun is more practical, as it allows for easier maneuvering. In clear, open waters, you might opt for a longer speargun for increased accuracy at greater distances.

Ferrox is probably the strongest. Javlok is the most fun to use and isn't weak either. Scourge is the easiest to use because its projectiles are bigger than the other two spearguns and its throw has headshot utility.

Step #1: Determine the point where the back of the spear is located when it is engaged in the trigger mechanism. Step #2: Measure from this point to the front of the gun. Step #3: Then add approximately 12 inches to the previously obtained measurement.

The basic principles are still the same: nice snug handle, tube or wooden barrel, a basic head that contains the rubber, and a reasonably light spear shaft.

The gun is measured from the tip of the muzzle to the handle, with the most common sizes being 90cm, 100cm, 110cm, 120cm, and 130cm (19.7” to 51.2”).

Correct weighting should see you able to lie on the surface and not sink; if you do, you're too heavy. To be comfortable with the lead carried, I want to have to fin quite hard to get down to five metres deep before my lead starts to take over. This is a safer way to dive.

Lanzo spears are best used for smooth-skinned fish, and since the low-level fish are all smooth-skinned, you'll want to start with that one. Also, be sure to pick up some Luminous Dye and some Peppered Bait. The Luminous Dye essentially makes fish glow underwater and therefore much easier to catch.

In any situation, the deeper you dive, the more dangerous it will be. Common problems are shallow water blackout when re-surfacing, which is when you need your partner. Dont over-strecth your capabilities by spearfishing when it is too rough, going too deep, staying under for too long or swimming too far.

The nose area of sharks are very sensitive, and a slight poke with the tip of the speargun is often all it takes to encourage a curious shark to leave the area. Defend our catch against sharks you say? Indeed!

A speargun is a ranged underwater fishing device designed to launch a tethered spear or harpoon to impale fish or other marine animals and targets. Spearguns are used in sport fishing and underwater target shooting. The two basic types are pneumatic and elastic (powered by rubber bands).

On size, I would recommend something smaller for a beginner speargun. Perhaps around 90cm or 100cm if you're shorter, or 100cm to 110cm if you're taller. It'll make it easy to load, and you'll find spearfishing a lot more fun as you start exploring what's hiding beneath the ocean's surface.

There are several thickness band options available for your speargun. The thickness of the bands determines the amount of stored energy in the bands. 9/16” (14mm) bands store approximately 90 pounds of force per band. 5/8” (16mm) bands store about 110 pounds of force per band.

Generally pole spears come in options for 5, 6 and 7 feet. The longer a pole spear gets the less maneuverable it'll be underwater. But it also affects the range. You'll be able to effectively shoot a 7 foot pole spear a couple of feet further than you would a 5 foot version of the same model.
