Is smoldering lake optional? ›

The Smouldering Lake is an optional location in Dark Souls III.

When you reach the ballista, use the crank to deactivate it. Use a Homeward Bone to fast travel back to either the Demon Ruins bonfire or the Abandoned Tomb bonfire if you wish to explore the Smouldering Lake further. To reach another bonfire, travel back to the Abandoned Tomb bonfire.

I usually do the lake prior to beating Wolnir. The reasons for that are the following: - Horace is located in the cave near the worm area, you need to kill him before Wolnir to advance Anri's questline.

The Great Sand Worm is a beast found in the Smouldering Lake of Dark Souls 3. It will appear as you head towards the Old Demon King boss. The easiest way to kill it is to run behind it. The worm can't turn around so it will never hit you.

The Old Demon King is located in Smouldering Lake. This is an area that is accessible from the Catacombs of Carthus. After killing High Lord Wolnir, go to the bridge before the boss arena, and you need to hit the anchor point. This will make the bridge collapse and allow you to climb down it.

Dark Souls 3 is no different, and there are four secret areas that you can totally miss if you aren't exploring thoroughly. There's a whole host of bosses and great items that you'll never find if you don't venture to these hidden locations, so you'll definitely want to give them a go.

The Old Demon King is weak to Dark damage. Infusing a weapon with Dark will do the trick, or you can use the Onyx Blade from the Ashes of Ariandel DLC, but there's also a wide range of spells that deal huge amounts of Dark damage. The boss is also weak to Black Knight weapons.

If you forgot or didn't know about needing the ballista to shoot open the floor and/or the section of wall that holds the Speckled Stoneplate Ring, you can go back and reactivate the ballista if needed.

Lore wise if i remember correctly, the army of carthus was battling the sandworm above in the catacombs, and it fell down to the smouldering lake, where they could not remove/fight it. So i think the balista was placed there to keep the worm at bay.

Is the worm in Smouldering Lake Solaire? ›

The land itself is now nothing more than a small maze of ruins, and a warm puddle — the so-called “Smouldering Lake.” During this time, the theory suggests, the parasite has completely consumed Solaire, turning him into the “Carthus Sandworm” an enormous, Dune-esque burrowing worm that spits lightning.

The lava field itself is home to two objects you'd need to be suicidal or have impressive fire resist to try grabbing: an Ember on the right, and a Sacred Flame spell on the left.

A wild death worm cannot be tamed, and a tame death worm can only be acquired through throwing an egg. Upon hatching, the death worm will start out at a tiny size, and will patrol the area it spawned in within a 50 block radius.

Both parts of the worm are immune to Wind, Stun, Freeze, Syphon and Instant Death, and weak to Water, Earth, Ice and Poison. When defeated, the Sand Worm has a notable 50% chance to drop Cake and Donut — consumable permanent stat boosters for Magic Attack and Magic Defence, respectively.

Ash Lake is an optional area accessed by successfully reaching the bottom of The Great Hollow, through a tunnel past the Mushroom enemies. It is a wide, open space with seemingly endless views of Archtrees amidst deep, dark blue waters and below a sky of dense clouds.

Along the South wall where the platform was, you can find a natural ramp upwards to reach the boss again. Platform five is next to the Lake of Rot boss fight, which is optional. This pressure plate makes it so fighting the boss without Scarlet Rot is viable, by creating platforms around the boss.
