Valentine’s Day Cookies with M&M’s

Food is my love language, so when Valentine’s Day rolls around each year, I’m all about gifts from the kitchen. And there’s no better way to show love to your Valentine than with a sweet, soft, chewy, rich, chocolate-filled M&M cookie. The best gift ever!

These Valentine’s Day cookies with M&M’s are adapted from my favorite with a simple swap of regular M&M candies for the pink and red Valentine variety. And I have to say, the simple swap made the cookies so cute and festive!

These cookies are easy to make and are ready to eat in a little under 30 minutes. They have crisp edges with a soft center and have chocolate chips and M&M’s in every bite. They’re great for gift giving and are one of the yummiest Valentine’s Day desserts out there!

Recipe Ingredients

These M&M Valentine cookies are easy to make with a chocolate chip cookies base and seasonal candies.

  • Butter: Unsalted is best as brands differ in the amount of salt added.
  • Sugars: Both brown sugar and granulated sugar are needed for both moisture and crisp edges.
  • Eggs: For binding the cookie ingredients.
  • All-purpose flour: Spooned and leveled, not packed.
  • Baking staples: Pure vanilla extract, baking soda and salt.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Use your favorite brand.
  • Valentine M&M’s: At least one cup, plus more to place on top.

Variations

Instead of cookies, use this same recipe to make . The sweet and rich flavor is still the same, but served in the shape of thick bars instead. The bars do take a little more time to bake, however the end result is just as delicious!

You can also make for a smaller bite. Use mini M&M’s and a small cookie scoop to make them the perfect miniature size!

How to Make Valentine M&M Cookies

Valentine M&M Cookies - I Heart Naptime (4)
  • Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugars with electric mixer beaters. Mix for 1-2 minutes, or until creamy and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix just until combined.
  • Mix in remaining ingredients: Add the flour, baking soda and salt and mix just until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips and M&M’s.
  • Scoop dough: Using a large cookie scoop (about 3 Tablespoons), scoop the cookie dough onto the baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Place any extra chocolate chips or M&M’s on the top of the cookies if desired.
  • Bake: Bake for 7-10 minutes, or until the edges are barely golden brown. Allow cookies to set on pan for 2-3 minutes, and then remove to a cooling rack.

Baking Tips

  • Measuring your flour correctly is key to a solid cookie. Adding too much flour causes the texture to become dry and crumbly, while not adding enough can cause them to become flat, crisp and brittle. Learn how to measure flour accurately with the spoon and level technique for best results.
  • For thick cookies chill the dough for a bit. It gives them a thick and chewy texture so that your cookies don’t spread as easily while they bake. If I have the time, I usually let my dough chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Another trick for thicker cookies is to add in 1-2 teaspoons of cornstarch with the flour. You can also add an extra 2 Tablespoons of flour for even thicker.
  • Press extra M&M’s onto the tops for a prettier cookie. You can do this right before baking, or right after the cookies are out of the oven. Either way works great and adds an extra pop up color (and chocolate) to your cookies! If your cookies spread at all while cooking use a spatula right when they come out of the even to press in the edges to form a circle.

Can you freeze cookies with M&Ms in them? ›

Leftovers: Store M&M cookies at room temperature in a closed container. Note that they dry out with time, so although they keep for up to 4 days, their quality will diminish over time. Freezing: These cookies freeze well. Let cool before transferring to a freezer-safe container and freezing for up to 3 months.

Can you bake with regular M&Ms? ›

You can make these with regular M&M's, holiday M&M's, mini M&M's, or a combination of M&M's and chocolate chips. If you're using a color theme you can also dip the top of each dough ball in colored sprinkles before baking.

What does cornstarch do to cookies? ›

As Levy Beranbaum writes in The Baking Bible, replacing a little bit of the flour in the dough with cornstarch results in “a more delicate cookie that is also easier to pipe or push through a cookie press.” Adding cornstarch helps tenderize tough gluten, contributing to a softer cookie dough with a finer crumb after ...

Why do my cookies come out flat and hard? ›

The Problem: Your Oven Is Too Hot

If your cookies repeatedly turn out flat, no matter the recipe, chances are your oven is too hot. Here's what's happening. The butter melts super quickly in a too-hot oven before the other ingredients have firmed up into a cookie structure.

How do you keep M&Ms from bleeding in cookies? ›

Press the chocolate chips and/or M&Ms into the top of the ball of dough closer together than you think, as they'll spread apart as the cookie bakes and spreads. If refrigerating or freezing your dough, wait to dot each ball until right before baking as the M&M colors can bleed into your cookie.

Why do M&Ms not melt in cookies? ›

M&Ms are made with a hard candy shell that protects the chocolate in the center from melting. However, during baking the candy shell might slightly crack from the heat or become more incorporated into the dough. Don't worry, they still taste just as delicious!

What cookies Cannot be frozen? ›

Most cookie doughs freeze well, but there are a few exceptions. Thin, delicate cookies like tuiles, florentines, lace, and pizzelles usually have liquidy batters that don't freeze particularly well unbaked or baked, so it's best to make these kinds of cookies fresh.

Is it OK to microwave M&Ms? ›

However, you must carefully watch the M&M's, as a few extra seconds could result in the candy burning inside your microwave. Microwaves vary, so you may need to do a test run. If the candy is cracked with chocolate seeping out, use these over-melted pieces to dress up other snacks.

What is the secret ingredient to keep cookies soft? ›

If you enjoy your cookies soft and chewy, chances are likely the recipe contains a common ingredient that serves a very specific purpose. No, it's not granulated sugar, nor the butter. It's not the egg, all-purpose flour, or even the vanilla extract. The simple, yet oh-so-necessary component is cornstarch.

Too Much Sugar

Sugar will caramelize when heated. In other words, it turns into liquid. Being over-ambitious with the sugar means over-saturation of liquid in the bake, leading to flat cookies. Not enough flour will lead to an insufficient amount of rising agents, which again causes flat cookies.

Baking Powder. The type of leavening you use in your cookies doesn't just help them rise while baking, it affects their texture and structure too. Baking soda in cookies yields a denser cookie with craggy tops, while baking powder causes cookies to rise higher during baking for a cakier texture.

Why are my snickerdoodles flat? ›

Why are my snickerdoodles flat? Snickerdoodles can come out flat if 1) the leaveners you used (for this recipe, it's both the baking soda and the cream of tartar) are on the old side and no longer work, and 2) if you baked them at a lower temperature. First, figure out if it's your leavener.
