Menominee Nation

Shawano Country is home to the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. The Menominee Tribe's history is unique because their origin begins at the mouth of the Menominee River, 60 miles east of their present Menominee Indian Reservation. This is where the five clans: ancestral Bear, Eagle, Wolf, Moose, and Crane were created. Not many tribes in this region can attest to the fact their origin place exists close or near to their present reservation. Explore and feel the history of the Menominee Indian Tribe from past to present as you drive through Menominee County.

Mohican Nation

Today, on Shawano County Road A in northeastern Wisconsin, a new sign announces the reservation of the MOHICAN NATION. Circling the Many Trails symbol are the words "Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians." The term"Mohican Nation" acknowledges the tribe's sovereignty and its government-to-government relationship with federal, state, county and township governments. The words "Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians" acknowledge the people's history.

The Stockbridge-Munsee Community is located on this reservation in Wisconsin, although enrolled tribal members live in other parts of Wisconsin, the United States and the world. The reservation boundaries encompass the two townships of Red Springs and Bartelme; and currently include 17,150 acres of trust land, 7,584 acres of non­ trust or fee land for a total of 24,734 acres.

Walls of Wittenberg

The murals colorfully adorn exterior walls of local businesses depicting the village’s history, past and current community members, a tropical island, a Warhol-esque set of postage stamps, a pool game, oldtime hardware store, a tribute to firefighters and EMTs, family pets and their owners, and more. Don’t miss the 2013 mural, an enormous tribute literally and figuratively – to the Green Bay Packers and their fans. In addition, there is an art space outdoor sculpture garden outside the WOWSPACE, a lovingly restored historic pharmacy building where art shows, musical performances and live theater take place.

Eland Railroad Depot

Menominee Logging Camp Museum

Shawano’s Heritage Park

The site of Shawano County’s first sawmill built in 1843. Museums include the Kast House built on site in 1871, schoolhouse built in 1895, reconstructed 1800’s log cabin, 1930’s limestone building, and “Oil House” now an agricultural museum, nationally acclaimed Zachow Depot, and Tabor Church . The Sikora Family Archive and Reception Center serves as a reception center, and a place to preserve, store, and make available to the public historically significant paper-based history of Shawano County. Spirit of Shawano Main Street Statues

Corner of Main Street and Green Bay Streets, Shawano, WIDirections

Genex donated the first Spirit of Shawano Sculpture (1990) depicting the dairy industry at the corner of Main and Green Bay Streets in Shawano to commemorate their 50th anniversary. Weber Veneer & Plywood, Timbco, Shawano Paper Mill and Tigerton Lumber Company donated the second sculpture to depict the history and importance of logging in the area. Sculpted by Lyndon Pomeroy of Billings, Montana, the statues remind us of our heritage and represent accomplishments made through dedication and hard work.

The Mooseyard

In the summer of 1886, Mr. Wilke’s mule “Moose” was accused of jumping a 6′ fence into the neighbor’s garden to eat the vegetables, and then jumping back over. The phrase “Moose is in his yard” shortened to “Mooseyard” and to this day refers to the area on the north shore of Shawano Lake and South of the Menominee Indian Reservation in the town of Wescott. This area hosts a popular St. Patrick’s Day parade and celebration annually as well as other events during the year.

Wittenberg Museum

The museum is operated by the Wittenberg Area Historical Society in the old German Lutheran Parochial schoolhouse. “Centers of Town” a new exhibit, focuses on 3 sites—Washington Park, corner of Webb and Vinal, and the basem*nts of churches. Other displays include American Indian artifacts; parlor, kitchen, and country store settings, as well as a large collection of vintage photographs of Wittenberg and the surrounding area.

Co-Op Park

Co-Op Park is a 3 acre park located on Richmond St. and is adjacent to the Mountain Bay State Trail. This is one of Shawano’s newest parks and was created in partnership with United Cooperative. The park has a full size basketball court, beautiful open sided shelter and playground with walking trail around it. The park also has direct access to the Mountain Bay Trail making it a great destination for those walking or biking. ADA accessible.
On Street parking is available at both the North and South sides of the park.

Eberlein Park is a 25 acre park located in the North Eastern portion of the City. At this park users have access to seasonal restrooms, pavilion, grills, picnic areas, vast amounts of open green space, and a playground. This park is directly adjacent to the Mountain Bay State Trail and provides a great resting place for those traveling along it. The park is also home to one of two Born Learning Trails in the City of Shawano. These trails provide an interactive curriculum designed for those ages 1 to 5. Eberlein is the home park for youth soccer in the city.

Franklin Park

Franklin Park is a three acre jewel located one block off of our downtown business district. It is home to Thursdayz@Franklin and live music series every Thursday June – August. It is also home to the Shawano Farmers Market occurring on Saturdays June to October. Church services, weddings, community events and private family events all occur here at different times. The amphitheater is reservable for your private or public use. Between Thanksgiving and the New Year be sure to drive by and admire the thousands of Holiday lights that are placed on site. You will be sure to see the 26 foot Christmas tree from a few blocks away.

Parking is available on site, parking lots across Washington Street and along adjacent streets.

A 3.6 acre park located one block northeast of downtown. This is the most popular boat landing to help you get on the majestic Wolf River. From there you can find your secret fishing hole, or head to the sandbars at Shawano Lake. This park offers a boat launch with four ramps, park shelter (available to rent), open green space, seasonal restrooms, piers and waterfront shoreline.A daily ($5) or annual permit ($30) is required to launch your boat and can be purchased on site.Vehicle and trailer parking is available at the park and across the road.

This boat landing provides access to the Wolf River. Put in on County M (Lieg Street) in the City of Shawano, about 6 blocks west of Main Street. Boat launch on left bank. Plenty of parking. No restrooms.

Lieg Park is a 5.3 acre park located on the East side of Shawano along Lieg Ave. This park is the location of the Senior Citizens community gardens. It has a waterfront biking and walking trail travel through it that connects Lieg Park to Sturgeon and Kuckuk Parks.

Includes 3 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, hiking and biking trails, a small lighted sledding hill with parking facilities, and an area for radio controlled plane use. Maple Hills has 4 different difficulty levels with over 7 miles of groomed skate and freestyle skiing and snowshoeing. In addition we have a snowshoe only trail that is 2.5 miles long.

Stand-up paddle boards, canoe, paddle boat and pontoon rentals available.

Sturgeon Park

This 1.71 neighborhood park in the spring of each year can see thousands of visitors per day. The unique experience that many come to see is the annual Lake Sturgeon Spawn. If timing it right one can see hundreds of the prehistoric fish all in view simultaneously. The park offers a Gazebo with free public WIFI that can be rented, asphalt walking and biking trails that connect to other local parks, while also being adjacent to the Mountain Bay State Trail. An old rail corridor that will take one to Green Bay or Wausau...just depends which direction you begin to walk. The park also offers an ADA accessible fishing pier that is popular for those who wish to wet there line.

This 110-acre property which encompasses Wilson Lake, includes a small beach area, fishing pier, and boat ramp. Park facilities include a large shelter, play equipment, restroom building with changing areas, and a rustic trail system (horse trails and hiking). We have 4 campsites with a picnic table and fire pit at each site. Water and electricity can be found a the shelter.

Waukechon Riverside Park

From Shawano, take Hwy. 22 south to Cty. CC. travel six miles south on CC then turn left Cty. CCC, and go 1/2 mile to the park, WI

This park has access to the Wolf River and offers fishing piers and boat landing only. The 68-acre site sits along the Wolf River. A gravel trail follows along the river's edge of the almost entirely wooded site. Facilities include a large paved boat launch with parking for approx. 16 car/trailer units, launching pier, shelter with restrooms and picnic area with grills.
