Russian salad appears as an economical variant of the Olivier salad, a traditional salad dish in Russian cuisine, it also included cold meats, some lavish and vegetables. Original Olivier salad became popular among the upper class in Moscow in the 19th Century but the exact origin is unknown.

It is a very complete dish that provides various benefits depending on the ingredients, most common are potatoes, green peas, beans, and carrots:
