This is our favorite banana bread! Sour cream banana bread is made with brown sugar, two bananas, butter and sour cream. I love to top it with chocolate chips for an extra treat!

Oh my gosh, do we LOVE this banana bread.

Our Favorite Banana Bread. (1)

This is by far our family’s favorite banana bread recipe. We make it constantly – I’d say it’s been in the rotation for nearly two years now. I actually photographed it last year to share and never got around to it. Instead I ended up sharing our favorite banana muffins. And pumpkin muffins!

Our Favorite Banana Bread. (2)

When it’s not the holiday season, we love to make a batch of muffins or a banana bread on sundays for the upcoming week. The kids love it for a snack, Max loves to have a little piece in his lunch and it makes me so happy that my kids love to bake.

I also always wanted to be the mom who have a delicious snack on the counter a few days a week, so here we are.

Our Favorite Banana Bread. (3)

Enter our favorite banana bread!

Now yes, I do have a bunch of other banana bread recipes. None as classic as this though. We do love this banana bread with espresso glaze. And this whole wheat coconut banana bread. And this almond butter roasted banana bread! All of them are super delicious.

But this one is more of a simple, traditional banana bread version like my mom still makes. It’s easy and straightforward. Plus, a little chocolate on top makes everything better.

Our Favorite Banana Bread. (4)

Here’s a few reasons why this banana bread is our favorite.

  • It only requires two bananas! Maybe three. Or two and a half. You only need one cup of mashed bananas, so it’s not super banana heavy. It also means you don’t need a whole bunch of bananas in order for this to work!
  • The sour cream makes the bread super tender and moist. You can also use plain greek yogurt! I’ve made it probably hundreds of times using both sour cream and greek yogurt. It’s interchangeable!
  • The sprinkle of chocolate chips on top brings the perfect amount of chocolatey sweetness. I like it this way better than sprinkling chocolate chips in the batter. When they are on top like this, it’s almost like you get a chocolate crust on top of the bread. Just make sure they are in a single layer, otherwise they will mostly sink into the center!
  • This is a classic banana bread that isn’t spiced at all. No nuts either. I’m strictly team no nuts in (most) desserts.

Our Favorite Banana Bread. (5)

Is this a dessert though? Let’s be real – banana bread is just an excuse to eat cake and dessert for breakfast. And I’m not mad about it.

Our Favorite Banana Bread. (6)

Of course – feel free to make this your own in a way that works for you. Add some nuts, leave the chocolate chips off or stir them right into the batter.

It’s the perfect treat to make this weekend!

I have tried many banana breads…..I will try this one ,because you haven’t steered me wrong. I always have some frozen bananas, mini CC’s and plain yogurt…….On another note, the mini CC’s are good for Raspberry CC pancakes. My girls favorite.

This banana bread was delicious! Very moist. The chocolate chips all fell down into a lovely pool of chocolate toward the bottom, so I must not have understood the “single layer” instructions, but it was delicious nonetheless.

Wow, this is the perfect banana bread! My two teenagers and I may likely eat the whole loaf in one day. We left the chocolate chips off and it took about 60 minutes to fully cook. Love that it got nice and brown without crusting too much at the edges or burning before it was fully cooked. This will definitely be our go to recipe. Thank you!

Made this with my toddler yesterday morning and it is fantastic! I subbed whole wheat flour and it worked really well since the sour cream keeps everything from drying out. Will definitely make this one again!

I’ve made dozens of different banana bread recipes over the years and this one is by far the best. I can’t pinpoint the difference but without soliciting reviews from my family they all commented that this was the best banana bread I’ve ever made. I’m printing this out and throwing away the rest of my recipes. Thank you!

Finally made this over the weekend! I reduced the brown sugar down to 3/4 cup, other than that followed the recipe. This will now be my go to Banana bread. Love that the chocolate chips are only on top, like a crust, perfect. Thank you!!

I don’t write reviews. I was a little skeptical because there was no cinnamon or nuts, but I followed the recipe anyway. Let’s just say that I made it at 3 pm. It’s not even 6 pm and it is nearly half gone between my husband and I. I initially tasted the banana bread itself before tasting the chocolate chips with it. Pretty darn good! It will be a go-to for me🙂. Make it!

    *I used Zoi Greek yogurt.

I mixed in the chocolate chips into the batter and it will not fully bake. I keep adding additonal minutes to no avail. The middle is still runny batter. How long should I have baked it for if I mix in the chocolate chips? The outside and top is fantastic just wish it would bake in the center.

hmmm i don’t know exactly why it won’t bake with the chocolate chips in it! did you use a ton of chocolate chips, or a smaller pan?? if it was me, i would tent the top with foil so it doesn’t burn, then bake for 8-10 mins at a time and test after each until it’s done?

I mixed in the amount of chocolate chips that would have been put on the top of the bread, I believe it was 1/2 cup. I have an old loaf pan which is fairly deep so it might be time for an upgrade. Thank you for the tips because I will definitely be making it again in a new pan and tented!
