On December 18, 1967, Matthew Aaron Schlapp was born to Susan Schlapp in the city of Wichita, Kansas. His mother was a Wichita City Councilwoman.
Schlapp spent most of his childhood days in Wichita, Kansas, where he went to St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, he then joined and continued his studies at Kapaun Mt Carmel Catholic High School, it was a private school still in Wichita where he graduated in 1986. He joined the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a Bachelor`s degree and earned his Master`s degree in Public Policy at Wichita State University. He was raised Catholic.

Matt Schlapp is married to Mercedes (Mercy) Viana Schlapp. They met while they both worked at the White House, actually, it was when the 911 attack took place, from there the couple decided if they had a short time to live, they would live it together, they wedded in 2012. Mercedes was then the Director of Speciality Media.
The couple co-founded Cove Strategies. It is a communication and political consulting firm based in Alexandria, Virginia. From 2017 September to 2019 July, she was the Director of Strategic Communications in the Trump Administration. Currently, she is working on the Trump re-election campaign.

His political career started in 1994, where he worked as a press secretary, campaign manager and chief of staff for a period of five years. Schlapp was the chief of the staff of Todd Tiahrt(R-Kan). He went ahead to join George W. Bush in his 2000 political campaign, where he served as a regional political director with oversight of Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Schlapp was unanimously elected Chairman of the American Conservative Union on 19th June 2014, and during his five-year tenure, the union has almost tripled in size, expanded CPAC, ACU to reach 25 million live viewers and 1 billion Twitter impressions.
Schlapp would consider running for the senatorial seat for Kansas in 2020, that is if senator Pat Roberts retires as it is expected of him since he has had four terms in office.
