The Story Behind the Street Cart Fries Recipe

About two years ago, I noticed that a new restaurant had opened up nearby. The restaurant was called Spitz Mediterranean Street Food. For some reason, I was incredibly intrigued.

For months, I begged my husband for us to go and give it a try. I had never had mediterranean food before and thought I’d really enjoy it. There was one big problem though; he had already had Spitz before at work and wasn’t the biggest fan. I was so bummed because I thought we would never get there.

To my surprise, he suggested one night that we go shopping and hit up Spitz. He knew I had been wanting to try it out and was willing to take one for the team. We shared their hummus, pita strips, and a wrap with their Doner meat. It was tasty! Even my husband thought it was delicious. When it’s catered at work, it comes all separate and the meat is usually gone before he makes it through the lunch line.

Needless to say, Spitz has become one of our favorite places to eat out. We quickly ventured beyond sharing a wrap. The loaded greek street cart fries were screaming at me, so we branched out and gave it a try. Of course we added the Doner meat. The street cart fries were so good that we’ve gone back multiple times for this dish on subsequent dates.

A few months back, while we were perusing the shelves at Trader Joe’s, we discovered that they carry gyro meat. It’s not technically the same things as Doner (check out this article to read about the difference), but it’s pretty darn close. I knew right away that I was going to recreate Spitz greek street cart fries with it!

These greek street cart fries are loaded with feta cheese, red onions, green peppers, pepperoncinis, olives, and Doner meat. Then they are drizzled with the creamiest garlic aioli. Even if you don’t think you like some of these toppings, just trust me. They all work so well together that you will forget whatever it was you didn’t like.

F.A.Q.s for Greek Street Cart Fries

Where can I get Doner or gyro meat?

This is probably the most difficult ingredient to find. I found mine at Trader Joe’s. I have seen that some Sam’s clubs and Wal-Mart sell it, but not all. If you can’t find it, I would still highly suggest making this recipe because it’s good with or without the meat. You could also make some chicken shawarma or flank steak to go on top.

What type of fries should I use?

I prefer using seasoned fries. However, the restaurant’s fries are skinnier and less seasoned. I don’t think you can really go wrong here. That said, I would steer clear of steak fries and curly fries.

What’s garlic aioli?

Aioli is typically a homemade mayo. Since this is made with mayo, it actually comes together really quickly. I would even recommend doubling it because it’s such a tasty fry sauce.

The garlic aioli was spot on. I made falafel instead of using meat. Tasted very similar to Spitz fry cart recipe. So good, thanks for the recipe!
