I caught an episode of F&T’s North American Trapper for the first time this afternoon. The new show is the first of its kind to feature all trapping all the time.

Today’s episode featured Johnny Thorpe on his fisher trapline in the Adirondacks of New York. Johnny demonstrated how to make a few different sets, trap modifications, and other tips and tricks relating to fisher trapping. Thorpe is truly a professional and did a great job explaining his fisher methods.

Between segments of Thorpe’s trapping footage, host Alan Probst talked about animal disease during the short “Conservation Minute” segment and gave a short plug for the National Trappers Association. During the commercials, it was interesting to see advertisem*nts from familiar trapping names like Duke, F&T Fur Harvesters Post, USA Foxx, Trapper and Predator Caller, and others.

Overall, the show was interesting and informative, but it wasn’t spectacular. The video and audio quality weren’t the best, and it looked like they just pulled segments straight from Thorpe’s fisher video rather than actually visiting him on the line and doing something specifically for the show.

Still, trappers can’t be too picky, as this is the only trapping show available on television and it’s still a lot of fun to watch. While it could have been better, I enjoyed my first episode of North American Trapper and will continue to watch it throughout the season. The show should do a great job educating a wider audience about the science and techniques behind the modern sport of trapping.

Look for a website in the near future at natrapper.com and catch the episodes on Wednesdays at 6pm and Thursdays at 11pm EST on DirecTV channel 344 and Dish Network channel 230.

I have heard about this show and am trying to locate it on DirecTV. I have called and spoke with DirecTV and they do not have a channel 344. Can anyone explain?

  Unfortunately, it looks like DirecTV has pulled ICTV due to problems with contract negotiations. Hopefully they can get something worked out. In a couple of weeks, the natrapper.com website should be up, which will allow you to watch episodes online. You can navigate to the link above to read more discussion about this.

i called directv and they said that channel is part time, you have to watch the show when it is on, they told me it is on thursday at 11:00 pm, i am going to try to watch it then.

Look on The Dish Network, channel 230 or as they call it ICTV.
Seems to show up Wed. about 4:00 , mountain.
The channel is mostly junk and advertising but am taping the F T shows, are very well worth watching and not all that badly put togeather. Glad its out there and worth the effort to find it.

I watched with interest 3 segments of the show. Upon my return from vacation, I’m unable to see it on Dish Network channel 230. Has it moved from the 6:00 PM timeslot or has it been discontinued? I really like the show as trapping is very scarce on TV. Alan does a great job, I hope it’s not history.

GREAT SHOW!!! WE LIVE IN THE WASATCH MOUNTAINS AND HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH PACK RATS..DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON TRAPPING THESE PESKY VARMITS?

I just tried to find the show on DirecTV channel 344 at 11P tonight, 10/21, Thursday. Channel 344 on DirecTV is some kind of religious channel and there is no listing for your show at 11P. Where and at what time on what days does it appear? Thanks

flipping channels tonight and found it on Directv 11:30pm on channel 608. I enjoyed the 20 minutes that I saw.

By sheer luck I woke up at 1145P last night and saw the last 15 minutes of the show. It was on DirecTV HUNT channel. I’m not sure of the number, it’s near the SPEED channel, below ESPN. It would be nice if someone at F&T would figure out where it’s being broadcast and post it on this site. It isn’t going to survive if no one can find it or watch it.

My husband and I are having touble as well finding this show on dish network channel 230. We have searched several days and time slots and it is nowhere to be found. Pleas provide an updated channel and time for this show so we can watch.

I was shocked and delighted to see the show today. I missed the first half but loved the last 15 minutes. Kudo’s to everyone involved for airing the show. Loved it!

Loved the show!! It took me back 30 years ago to my trap line in upstate NY. They were great days and kept me out of trouble. Rock on guys and keep the shows coming.

just watched the show for the first time today, 01/17/11, at 5:pm cst on directv channel 608, pursuit channel. show was really intresting,even though i haven’t trapped in years.

It’s amazing how much this show has been bounced around on different networks. I caught it yesterday (Sat, Jan 22) on the HUNT channel (didn’t even know I had that channel!) channel #240, at 5:30 pm MST. This was on Dish Network, so if you get channel 240 on Dish, you may be able to catch the show. Sounds like Dale caught it on channel 608 on DirecTV.

As a woman I Love to hunt & fish. I just caught part of your show and I think it is horrible! I think your show is just going to give PETA grounds to gain more supporter against animal cruelty. It is one think to hunt something and do your best to ensure it does not suffer. Your show on the other hand seem to be promoting animal suffering. The show clearly shows a coyote caught in a trap and it appeard to be hurt & scared. The camera just stays on the animal and the individual does not seem to even care the animal is suffering. SO GOOD GOING MAKING IT HARDER ON US HUNTERS & FISHERMAN!

Okay, I am a 14 year old avid predator hunter/ trapper and I have absolutely no problem with these guys trapping various varmints and puting it on tv, but when I see people who are trapping coyotes with a jaw trap and just sit in their truck and watch it suffer as they just talk to a stupid camera as the coyote whines and howles in distress. Why the hell don’t you either just shoot it right away or use a conibear trap that will kill them instantly. I’ll tell you that I’m all for trapping varmints when they become a real problem but I just absolutely hate to see people just make the animals suffer for absolutley no reason. I’m all for a show to teach people how to trap varmints but I just wish they would do it in a more humane way. This is why a lot of people give hunters and trappers crap for making animals suffer but if everyone would just do it in a quick and painless way we would have no problem. And I’m not just singleing these guys out its a lot of people that do this and I just want people to spread this message to their fellow hunters and trappers.

I HOPE THAT THEY WILL START USING JAW TRAPS AGAIN IN FLORIDA. THEN THE CAT, COON AND OTHER VARMENTS WILL BE UNDER CONTROL AND MIGHT JUST HELP THE ECONOMY BY BRINGING BACK THE SALE OF HIDES AND PELTS.

COULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME THE BAIT THAT THE GIRL WAS USING
TO TRAP RACCOON,FOX, AND FISHERS.
SHE ALWAYS USED THIS BAIT WITH RED FOX URINE.

I am a trapper as well and i watch your show every week. I recently have been tryin to make some mink sets. I dont seem to be haven any luck with it. What is the best way to catch one. so if you could help me out a bit would be great.

How’s it going
I am a trapper out of the northwest region of New Mexico. I have been trapping for over 13 years and I was wondering how would I start out a tv show on trapping. I have been watching this show for a while now and I still have not had any idea on how you all started out with this show. Also how did your different trappers get aired on here?

dish shows na trapper on channel 240 but its not being aired right now maybe this fall.too much talking not enough on location(where to put traps ).wouldnt hurt to show fur care and skinning

Personal to Allan Probst-
My father Max H. Lude Sr. grew up in Fayette County Illinois just South of Bingham on the banks of the Huricane Creek. His best friend was “Allan Probst”! They hunted & trapped together for years. ~ 1910-1937.
I recently saw your show and was thrilled to see such a great educational tool and thourally enjoyed it.
Was the Fayette County Probst Family part of your heritage? I am a historical researcher and am writing a book on my family history. I would enjoy hearing from you.
