Since we got our air fryer, I’m consistently on the lookout for good air fryer recipes. We love our air fryer! It’s changed the way we cook and I love the ease and convenience.
Today, I’m sharing one of our new favorite dishes: our air fryer baked potato recipe! It’s so easy to make and these always turn out to be the best baked potatoes EVER! Seriously, this recipe results in baked potatoes with fluffy insides and crispy potato skins that are so flavorful!
Really, it isn’t much of a recipe because it’s so easy, but this method produces the most delicious baked potatoes I’ve ever had. With just a few simple ingredients, these potatoes cook to a delectable golden crispness on the outside while remaining perfectly fluffy and soft on the inside!
The taste and texture combination makes a splendid meal.
2 russet potatoes or Idaho potatoes, scrubbed and dried with a paper towel (large potatoes are best but you can use medium potatoes as well)
1 tablespoon oil of your preference (Peanut oil is delicious. Other great options are olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, grapeseed oil, ghee, or you could also use tallow. Just make sure whatever you use has a high smoke point)
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions
Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees F
Brush the scrubbed potatoes with your preferred oil and sprinkle generously with salt.
Place prepped potatoes into the air fryer basket and then into the air fryer
Cook for 1 hour. Test the potatoes for thorough cooking by pricking them with a fork.
Serve with your favorite toppings from baked potato staples like butter, sour cream, and chives.
That’s it! Easy, breezy!
Why Cook Baked Potatoes in an Air Fryer?
You might be asking why you wouldn’t just use a microwave instead of an air fryer. Baked potatoes from the microwave just don’t have the same texture and flavor of an air fryer baked potato!
Microwave-baked potatoes lack that scrumptious crispy outside and just don’t taste as good. Once you’ve tried this air fryer baked potato recipe, you’ll never want to make them in the microwave again!
Sure, air frying is not the easiest way and it’s going to take longer than the microwave, but the results are worth it. Trust me!

Notes
If your air fryer cooks hot or the size of your potato is rather small, you may need to adjust your cooking time to cook for a little less time.
Store any leftover potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat them in the air fryer for about 5 minutes.
Yes, you can cook more than 2 at a time, just make sure you cook them in a single layer so the hot air can circulate.

Less time: The baked potato made in the air fryer took less time than when baked in the oven. A 10-ounce potato took 40 to 45 minutes to get tender and crisp, whereas a potato baked in the oven took about 1 hour. Crisper skin: The skin of the air fryer baked potato became considerably crispier.
Preheat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Rub potatoes with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley. Place potatoes in the air fryer basket. Cook in the preheated air fryer until potatoes are soft, 40 to 50 minutes, depending on potato size.
Air fryers might not serve quite the same function as a traditional oven, but they have a fair amount of crossover in how they operate. For instance, preheating your air fryer much the same way you'd preheat your oven might be the secret to ensuring a crispy, savory potato.
Soaking the potatoes does something magical with the starches—it helps achieve the coveted French fry crispiness and prevents the fries from sticking together. This is what I did for the air fryer, too. I soaked these potatoes for about an hour or so, but I've also soaked them for up to 24 hours with no ill effect.
Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.
The size of the potato and model of airfryer may effect the cooking time. To speed up the cooking time, you can microwave on high for 8-10 mins before airfrying (check after 15-20 mins). When ready, the skin should be crisp and the inside tender and fluffy. Split and serve immediately with the toppings of your choice.
Add the frozen roast potatoes to a preheated air fryer basket. This will help make sure they get a lovely crispy skin. Shake the air fryer basket: To promote even cooking and prevent sticking, give the basket of your air fryer a gentle shake halfway through the cooking process.
Check the oven temperature. It should be at least 350F/180C. Make sure the potatoes are wrapped in foil and pricked so they don't explode. Very large potatoes may still be hard after an hour.
You might not be using enough oil. If you're not using enough oil to coat the potato, it won't get crispy as it bakes. You might be using the wrong type of potato. Potatoes with a high starch content, such as Russet potatoes, are better for baking because they become fluffy and crispy when cooked.
Spray each potato with a few spritzes of oil and season with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Arrange in the basket, and air fry 400F until a knife can easily be inserted into the center of each potato, about 35 to 40 minutes, turning halfway through cooking time.
Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.
Season the fries with salt before air frying, but add more salt (preferably sea salt) after frying. The fries soak up the salt better after frying. Fried food generally doesn't reheat well. But with in air fryer, you can reheat them once if they get cold ( on the same day of making).
The reason is to prevent the potatoes exposure to air, which causes dehydration, oxidation, and discoloration. Immersing cut potatoes will also help rinse off excess starch.
Oil: Use a neutral vegetable oil suitable for high heat. I use sunflower oil. Salt: Make sure to add the salt AFTER air frying. It does really affect the crispiness in this particular recipe.
Faster cooking: Air fryers cook food faster than traditional ovens, making it a time-efficient cooking method. Versatility: Air fryers can cook a variety of foods, including meat, vegetables, and even baked goods.
Oven cooking time is reduced by 20% to convert to air fryer cook time. For example, a recipe that calls for 60 minutes in the oven, can be converted to air frying time by reducing the baking time by 12 minutes (60mins x .20 = 12 minute reduction).
Air fryers work differently than regular ovens, so getting the temperature and cook time right can take some practice. Most foods cook much faster and brown quicker in an air fryer, so it's best to start with less time and add more if needed.
Yes, an air fryer does cook faster than an oven – around 20% faster, to be precise. Air fryers also save time (and energy) due to the fact that, unlike an oven, they don't need to be preheated. Cooking speed is one of the greatest advantages offered by air fryers.
