Filling

1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

1/8 teaspoon salt

5 (about 2 1/3 pounds)apples, peeled, cored, sliced 1/4 inch thick

2 tablespoons lemon juice

Topping

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar, divided

3/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

1/2 cup buttermilk

How to make

  1. STEP 1

    Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 8-inch square baking dish (2-quart) with butter.

  2. STEP 2

    Combine brown sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, cardamom and 1/8 teaspoon salt in large bowl; mix well. Add apples and lemon juice; toss until evenly coated. Spread apples evenly into prepared baking dish.

  3. STEP 3

    Whisk together 3/4 cup flour, 3 tablespoonsgranulated sugar, baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt in large bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk; stir until just combined. Drop by large spoonfuls over apples. Sprinkle topping evenly with remaining 1 tablespoon granulated sugar.

  4. STEP 4

    Bake 60-65 minutes or until topping is deep golden brown and filling is bubbling.

  5. STEP 5

    Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
